Chapter Fifteen

Rob is fussing around again, asking Theo if he can get him something to eat now, though Theo is point-blank refusing his stepfather. Her son has always had a healthy appetite, so she knows this is odd, but she doesn’t know how Rob can possibly expect either of them to want food.

Em gets up and walks past him back into the bedroom, feeling like a prisoner trapped inside this villa, even though she cannot imagine walking outside of it ever again. At some point she will have to. They will all have to leave and go home, a family of three.

She is trying to make sense of what she knows. She is certain Theo wasn’t asleep when Isaac left the room last night. She can tell by the way his eyes flick away from her when he speaks. Had it been Isaac sitting in front of her she would probably have shaken him until he’d told her the truth. But with Theo she has to keep the channel of communication open for him to speak to her when he is ready.

She can only hope this is not too long, and still she reassures herself that whatever Theo has to tell her, it is not going to help lead them to knowing who hurt her son.

It is the thought that someone out there could have done this to Isaac that she cannot get her head around. How could someone have wanted him dead?

Her two sons had loved each other as young children. They’d wanted for no one else, or at least that was the case with Theo. He looked up to his brother constantly, like Isaac was the only person on the planet. Em has often wondered if he never felt the need to make loads of friends when he always had his brother to play with.

She can remember them as two little boys as if it were yesterday, the holiday in Majorca they went on when Isaac was seven and Theo five, in their matching swimming shorts, their excitement. They never used to argue, not properly like some siblings did.

Em realises in that moment that there is someone who can answer one of her questions: Charlie. Why didn’t she think of it before? They supposedly argued about their father so he might know why.

He picks up on the first ring. He must be expecting more news. ‘Hi?’ he says urgently.

‘The police have been here again,’ she tells him. ‘They think Isaac was pushed.’

‘Oh God.’

‘It wasn’t an accident and he didn’t do it himself. So someone killed him.’ Her words break. ‘Who? Who could have done that to him?’ she cries.

‘I don’t know.’ His words are short and breathless, a mixture of grief, anger and disbelief. ‘But we are going to find out, Em,’ he promises her. ‘We won’t stop till we do. Did you get my text? I have to go to Stanstead but the flight doesn’t leave until nine p.m.. I’ll stay in Crete and get a boat over in the morning.
